Shaping the workforce of the future
In October 2011 the Confederation of British Industry (CBI)
set out its views on what needed to be done to improve the
employment prospects of young people. A key element for
success was building stronger links between schools and
education providers and employers. The CBI commented:
our education system has to prepare
young people more effectively for the world
of work. As businesses, we should not be
complaining from the sidelines – it is our
duty to get involved and help in the process.”
Action for Jobs – How to get the UK working
Local employers that want to get involved in developing the
workforce of the future can do so through an extensive menu
of opportunities that are available locally. Theses can include
offering work placements, supporting mock interviews,
providing careers talks or apprenticeship opportunities. The
exact offer can be tailored to each business, recognising that
larger employers are able to contribute more. This gives local
employers the opportunity to get involved in preparing young
people for the world of work, shaping their views and
providing them with an understanding of what employers are
looking for.
