most non-domestic premises, including shops, offices,
pubs, warehouses and factories.

How to reduce your business rates -
You may be eligible
for a reduction in business rates if you qualify under one of
our criteria.

Health and safety in the
workplace
Our health and safety team undertakes inspections,
investigates accidents and offers Chartered Institute of
Environmental Health (CIEH) approved training.
Employers have a legal duty to display a safety poster in a
prominent position in each workplace. Order your poster
online or contact the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
These are our areas of our work:
Occupational health and safety -
The council has a legal
duty to enforce the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974
and related legislation.
Interventions -
We carry out a range of interventions
including advisory visits and inspections in order to see the
workplace, the work activities, management practices and
procedures of a business.
Risk assessment -
Advice on why you need a risk
assessment and how to conduct one for your business.
Accidents -
Information and advice about the kind of
workplace accidents that need reporting.
Cooling tower registration -
If you use cooling towers or
evaporative condensers in your work activity, you are
required to ensure effective maintenance in order to prevent
the spread of legionella bacteria.
Asbestos -
Asbestos can be harmful. If you have asbestos-
containing materials in your work place in areas such as
your roofs, walls, boilers and pipework you are required to
manage its presence and condition.
Hazardous substances -
Using chemicals or other
hazardous substances at work can put people's health at
risk, causing diseases including asthma, dermatitis or cancer.
Businesses should be aware of the Control of Substances
Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH).
Smoke-free workplaces -
Since 2007 every indoor and
partially-enclosed workplace and work vehicle has been
required to be smoke-free. What does this mean for your
