“I’d put my money on solar energy…
I hope we don’t have to wait until
oil and coal run out before we
tackle that.”
Thomas A. Edison, 1931
Buildings as Power Stations
Imagine a world in which buildings can generate, store and release their own
energy. At SPECIFIC we’re developing functional coatings for building materials:
coatings that can be applied to roofs and walls on a large scale to capture energy from
the sun, store it within the building and release it on demand as heat or electricity.
Innovation and Knowledge Centre
Based at Baglan Bay Energy Park with the full support of Neath Port Talbot County
Borough Council, SPECIFIC represents a growing cluster of innovative organisations
led by Swansea University with strategic industrial partners Tata Steel, BASF and
NSG Pilkington. Together we take coatings all the way from concept through
fundamental scientific research to the point at which they can be manufactured at
scale, commercially.
People and Skills
More than 130 people are based at SPECIFIC, including university researchers,
senior industrial scientists, product developers, business development specialists
and an architect. This unique mix makes for a vibrant base from which ideas are
shared, tested and developed into new products.
Training and education are critical: the centre plays host to a suite of training
programmes run by Swansea University’s Materials Academy, delivering skills
and knowledge to support industry and the economy both locally and nationally.
